Mundelein elementary and middle school students will begin school after Labor Day in the next two school years to match calendar changes at Mundelein High School. The District 75 School Board approved the changes Tuesday night.
The Mundelein High School District 120 School Board adjusted its calendar on August 12 in an effort to allow for construction at the high school to proceed as effectively as possible.
Next year’s school calendar will run from Sept. 8, 2026 to June 10, 2027. The following year, it will run from Sept. 7, 2027 to June 9, 2028. The changes will allow for a 15-week summer in 2026 followed by a 13-week summer in 2027. A typical summer is 11 weeks long.
The Board did not make any changes to the current 2025-26 school year calendar.
“Our schools will maintain the same number of instructional days,” said Dr. Corey Tafoya, Superintendent of Mundelein School Districts 120 and 75.
The high school needed to extend the next two summers to allow its construction team to perform the heaviest work during a time when the students are not on campus, Tafoya explained.
District 75 sent out a family survey during the summer to help the School Board consider if it should continue aligning its school calendar with MHS during the high school’s facilities improvement project.
Results of the survey showed that 77.6 percent of staff and parents supported or were indifferent to District 75 aligning with the MHS academic calendars for the 2026-27 and 2027-28 school years.
District 75 administrators have been in contact with the Mundelein Park and Recreation District regarding the changes and will work together to maintain continuity with Rec Connect, the Park District’s before and after school program.
The timing of the Board’s decision will allow District administrators and staff to address the challenges of a calendar change and minimize the impact on students and families.
