Lincoln teacher builds confidence through connection

For early childhood teacher Ashley Blennerhassett, some of the most meaningful moments come through the relationships she builds with students each day.

Whether it’s a student using a new word for the first time, interacting with a peer, or excitedly greeting her with a hug after a brief time away from the classroom, those moments are reminders of the trust and connection that help young learners grow.

“In early childhood, everything starts with connection,” Blennerhassett said. “Helping students feel safe, understood, and ready to engage is what allows real growth to happen.”

In Blennerhassett’s classroom, progress is often measured in moments that may seem small but carry big meaning.

“I love seeing those breakthroughs,” she said. “When a student uses a new word, interacts with a peer for the first time, or gains confidence in something they’ve been working on.”

While early childhood classrooms often appear playful, Blennerhassett emphasizes that every moment is thoughtfully designed to support student growth.

“Everything we do is intentional,” she said. “I’m constantly adapting to each child’s needs and making real-time decisions to support their growth.”

Her approach focuses on helping students build independence, communication, and problem-solving skills through consistent, supportive strategies. She uses visual supports, offers choices, and engages in restorative conversations. When students feel safe and understood, she said, they’re more willing to take risks and engage in learning. That intentionality extends beyond instruction and into the strong collaboration within the classroom.

“We’ve built such a strong bond as a team,” Blennerhassett said. “We’re always thinking about how to support each other and meet the needs of our students.”

That teamwork helps create a consistent environment where students feel supported, understood, and ready to learn.

Blennerhassett’s connection to District 75 runs deep. She grew up in this district, completed her student teaching here, and now teaches here. That full-circle experience fuels her commitment to creating meaningful learning environments where students feel valued and supported.

“Watching students gain confidence, independence, and a genuine joy for learning, that’s what makes this work so rewarding,” she said.
