Helping Students Find Their Voice at Lincoln Early Learning Center

At Lincoln Early Learning Center, communication is more than just words; it’s connection, confidence, and access. For paraprofessional Kelly Cowell, helping students find their voice is at the heart of everything she does.

“I love seeing the growth in students from the beginning of the year to the end,” Cowell said. “Especially when they start using sign language, learning colors, numbers, and shapes, and then applying it in the right context. That’s really special to see.”

Many of the students Cowell supports are still developing their language skills, and for some, communication can be a daily challenge.

“I think it lessens their frustration when they have a way to communicate their needs and wants,” she said. “With sign language, communication boards, or other tools, they’re able to express themselves, and that changes everything.”

One of her favorite moments each day is a group activity where students incorporate sign language into a weather song.

Cowell works across multiple classrooms throughout the day, supporting both students and teachers wherever needed. Her ability to anticipate students’ needs and step in seamlessly has made her an important part of the Lincoln team.

“Kelly is really good at almost predetermining what students need before they even know it themselves,” said Teacher Ashley Blennerhassett. “She builds such strong connections with the kids, and they truly look forward to seeing her every day.”

That consistency matters, especially for young learners. The students notice when “Ms. Kelly” isn’t there.

For Cowell, the role is deeply personal.

“I was born deaf, so I understand the need for inclusion,” she said. “I always want students to feel accepted, supported, and able to communicate.”

That lived experience shapes how she connects with students and helps create an environment where they feel understood and empowered. At Lincoln, Cowell says that collaboration and support among staff help strengthen the student experience.

“We have a fantastic team,” she said. “We’re always supporting each other and thinking of ways to better meet students’ needs.”
