On the night of the fourth-grade concert at Mechanics Grove Elementary School, music teacher Ashley Oropeza announced that students played a big part in planning the evening’s performance.

It was no surprise to the parents; students at MG regularly take leadership roles in school events. It’s part of a philosophy shared by Principal Tanya Fergus, who has helped to grow and develop the “Leader in Me” program at the school.

Fergus, in her 10th year leading Mechanics Grove, regularly models leadership for her students and staff. She spearheaded several groundbreaking programs aimed at enhancing both academic achievement and the social-emotional well-being of students.

For all of her achievements, Fergus will be honored in May as part of the Illinois State Board of Education’s “Those Who Excel Awards.” She will receive an Award of Special Recognition in the category of school administrators - one of only a few Lake County administrators to receive the award this year.

“I’m really very honored and very excited,” Fergus said. “It’s nice to know I’m still having an impact.”

The annual Those Who Excel & Teacher of the Year banquet will be held on May 17 in Bloomington, but a conflict with an event for a family member will keep Fergus from receiving her award in person

“Principal Fergus represents the very best of educational leadership,” said District 75 Deputy Superintendent Sarah Cacciatore, who wrote a letter recommending Fergus for the award. “She transformed Mechanics Grove School into a model of educational excellence through her visionary leadership and commitment to student success.”

Educators who receive the Award of Special Recognition are valued members of their school community who have been recognized by their colleagues, students, families, and administrators for the skills, passions, and talents they bring to their school community.

Fergus supports and encourages student leadership through “The Leader in Me” program and with increased Latino parent and community involvement through a variety of specific invitation-only events. She also facilitated the creation of a school mission and vision statement in partnership with staff, students and community members.

“She has a remarkable ability to connect with students, fostering an atmosphere where they feel valued, respected, and are seen as leaders,” said MG Assistant Principal Louise Bertaud, who also recommended Fergus for the award. “Her driven nature inspires her team to strive for excellence and challenges them to reach their full potential.”
