Carl Sandburg Middle School believes a well-rounded education consists of not only a stimulating and challenging academic program, but also a program of extracurricular activities that allow students to develop physically, socially, and emotionally outside of the classroom environment.  Sandburg works to offer an extensive program of interscholastic and intramural athletics as well a variety of clubs.  Participation in any extracurricular programs, provides students with learning experiences that are difficult to duplicate in the classroom.

CSMS is part of the Lake Side Athletic Conference.  Sandburg competes in both athletic and academic activities. Students in 7th and 8th grade can try out for volleyball, basketball, cheerleading, poms, and soccer.  Wrestling, cross county and track are open enrollment to all 6, 7 & 8th grade students.  The Lakeside Conference is made up of 11 teams located as far north as Wadsworth and as far east as Highland Park. You can find information on games, meets, and competitions in the Sandburg calendar.

Students joining any athletic team must maintain academic eligibility, attend all practices, games and related events, and demonstrate good sportsmanship in order to participate on the team.  Students must have a current sports physical on file before trying out or participating in any competitive team.

All competitive athletic teams require per student sports fee of $132.00.  The fee is typically paid in full before the first competition of the respective sport.  For students wishing to participate on multiple athletic teams, there is a yearly per student fee cap at $375.00.
