As Mundelein Police Officer Roger Dunn walks down the Carl Sandburg hallway, eager students clamor right beside him. The reason seems obvious at first: he has a pocket full of candy! During lunch and passing periods, he’ll challenge students to games and award candy if they win. Sometimes to earn a prize, the student will have to tell him something they learned that day.

The Board was one of 42 Illinois school districts honored with the School Board Governance Recognition. It recognizes the Board’s effective governance behaviors and its commitment toward obtaining the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively govern the district.

Mundelein elementary and middle school students will begin school after Labor Day in the next two school years to match calendar changes at Mundelein High School. The District 75 School Board approved the changes Tuesday night.
The Mundelein High School District 120 School Board adjusted its calendar on August 12 in an effort to allow for construction at the high school to proceed as effectively as possible.

When Mark Pilut retired in 2024 after serving as principal of Carl Sandburg Middle School for 20 years, he said he wouldn’t mind if changes are made once he’s gone.
One change was made this spring with the renaming of the school’s multi-purpose room, also known as the MPR. In May, the school dedicated the room in his name and MPR now stands for the “Mark Pilut Room.”
